G-MET (2019/2020) GRANT FOR MASTERS STUDIES

The Ghana Meteorological Agency under the auspices of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) & Africa (Marine) project is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for an academic grant to pursue a master’s degree with a specialization in earth observation (EO) data application for coastal and marine resources management.

The GMES & Africa (Marine) project is being implemented by a consortium of research centres, universities and a regional NGO in West Africa, under the leadership of University of Ghana. The members of the consortium are Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) - Nigeria, Centre Universitaire de Recherche d'Application en Télédétection (CURAT) –  Côte d'Ivoire, Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin, (IRHOB) - Benin, Centre de Recherches Océanographiques de Dakar-Thiaroye (CRODT) - Senegal, Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) – Ghana,  Instituto Nacional de Desenvolvimento das Pescas (INDP) – Cape Verde and Wetlands International Africa (WIA) – Senegal. 

The project has developed EO products and tools for ECOWAS Coastal states to use in managing the environment and its resources, and it is financed by the Commissions of the African Union and European Union. Through this call, the project is awarding grants to graduate students in any of the following countries - Benin, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Nigeria. The award is tenable in the University of Ghana. The successful applicant will undertake a project work in an EO related topic to be supervised by an expert from the host institution.

GRANT PACKAGE

A monthly stipend of 350 EUR per month (in country) or 450 Euro per month (in region) is mainly intended as a support for the successful applicant to complete a master’s degree study in the host institution. Applicants who are already recipients of a scholarship/Fellowship/Grant must not apply.

ELIGIBILITY

  • The purpose is to sponsor excellent students who are pursuing, or intend to pursue, a master’s course at the University of Ghana. Students who have completed their 1st year master’s degree and about to embark on their 2nd year, or those who have enrolled in a one-year MSc are eligible to apply.

  • Receipt of the grant is subject to the condition that the successful applicant is enrolled in a master’s study course at the University of Ghana, commensurate with the application.

  • The course of study at the master’s level must be in any of the following disciplines: Marine Sciences, Fisheries Science or Coastal Management

  • Applicants with a background in remote sensing and knowledge of computer programming would be an advantage.

 

HOW TO APPLY

Interested applicants should submit the underlisted to the Co-ordinator by 30th May 2019:

  • Letter of intent (not more than 2 pages);

  • A brief proposal (4 pages);

  • Certified transcript and certificate;

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation

  • Proof of registration in the host institution (except for those who have applied for a one-year masters who must do so within one month of registration)
