The recent joint workshop organized by the University of Ghana (UoG) and the Centre de Suivi Ecologique (CSE) in Dakar, Senegal, from July 24th to 26th, 2024, marked a significant milestone in fostering inter-regional cooperation and cross-fertilization among consortia.

On July 23, 2024, the MarCNoWA Regional Steering and Coordinating Committee convened in Dakar, Senegal, to review the progress of their ongoing projects and introduce a new web application designed for oil spill monitoring. The workshop, organized by the University of Ghana's Regional Marine Centre, brought together representatives from nine out of the eleven partner institutions across North and West Africa.

Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, July 12, 2024 – The highly anticipated regional workshop aimed at strengthening the expertise of coastal and marine resource management professionals concluded today with resounding success. This three-day event, part of the Natural Resource Management in Central Africa (GERNAC) project under Phase II of the GMES & Africa program, was hosted at the Léon Hôtel de la Paix.

The University of Ghana and the Ghana Navy have signed an MoU to improve maritime domain awareness through the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa programme. Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of Naval Staff, and Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, formalised the agreement. Prof. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, emphasised the university's role in providing essential data and research to support the Navy's operations.

On May 1, 2024, the Edenway Foundation, a Partner of the Marine and Coastal Areas Management in North and West Africa (MarCNoWA) consortium, officially launched the GAIAthon ’24. This virtual launch, under the umbrella of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa (GMES & Africa) programme, signifies a major stride in integrating digital literacy into environmental sustainability efforts across Africa.

The MarCNoWA consortium is proud to announce the successful completion of a bespoke training programme held in Ghana, dedicated to enhancing the marine weather forecasting skills of 13 selected trainees from Togo. Facilitated by the University of Ghana and the Ghana Meteorological Agency, this focused initiative aimed at advancing data management, forecasting, and early warning systems to bolster maritime safety and efficiency. This strategic effort underscores our commitment to improving regional marine weather forecasting capabilities.

In a landmark partnership poised to redefine the landscape of Earth Observation (EO) and its application in sustainable development, the “Centre de Suivi Ecologique” (CSE) of Senegal has joined forces with the MarCNoWA Project, led by the University of Ghana's College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS).

In an effort to bolster maritime safety and environmental security along the coasts of Greater Accra and Volta regions, a significant training workshop was held at the NAFAG Hall in Tema on 28th December 2023.
