On June 5 every year, many people and institutions join hands to commemorate the World Environment Day, while June 8 is set aside to mark World Ocean Day.

As the world is bedevilled with the COVID-19 pandemic, commemorating these two days would require concerted effort to help raise awareness on the importance of the environment and the ocean.

It is estimated that more than 40 billion dollars will annually be lost or absorbed in Africa due to the consequences of climate change effects. Therefore, to reduce the consequences of climate change in Africa, which has become the most vulnerable despite being the less contributor to climate change, the science experts are advocating a reduced impact of climate change through adaptation measures.

The first-ever 4-day ECOWAS and Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) & Africa conference has ended in Ivory Coast with a call on West African countries to consider usage of Earth Observation (EO) products and services in decision making towards adaptation to climate change in the marine and coastal areas.

The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa Project in West Africa, being implemented by the University of Ghana, is offering the following non-key expert (NKE) positions to qualified individuals or registered start-up companies:

The Regional Marine Centre (RMC) of the University of Ghana, through the GMES & Africa project, has organized its first Regional Training Workshop on the application of Earth Observation (EO) data for the management of marine and coastal areas. Seventeen (17) trainees, from 11 coastal West-African countries, were trained on the use of EO data to develop products that will help support the management of coastal ecosystems and generate coastal vulnerability information for sensitive areas along the coast of West Africa.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency under the auspices of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) & Africa (Marine) project is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for an academic grant to pursue a master’s degree with a specialization in earth observation (EO) data application for coastal and marine resources management.
